AstraZeneca has presented the results of a clinical trial in its GALAXY program of Crestor (rosuvastatin) at the the American College of Cardiology meeting, as it continues its marketing offensive to set the stage for the international roll-out of the drug, which debuted in its first markets earlier this year (Marketletters passim).
Results of the landmark Collaborative Atorvastatin Diabetes Study (CARDS), presented at the American Diabetes Association meeting in Orlando, Florida, show that a 10mg daily dose of Lipitor (atorvastatin), given to patients with type 2 diabetes and low-to-average cholesterol levels, almost halves the risk of stroke and reduces cardiac events by over one third.
The trial attracted publicity last year when it was stopped prematurely because pre-specified clinical endpoints were reached sooner than predicted (Marketletter June 23, 2003). Patients had completed just under four years of a planned five-year run.
