Lotronex

(alosetron, Glaxo Wellcome)

A 5-[HT.sub.3] antagonist for women with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) whose predominant symptom is diarrhea. The first drug approved specifically for IBS.

* Recommended Dosage: 1 mg twice a day

* Special Considerations: Lotronex has not been shown to be effective in women with the constipation-predominant form of IBS or in men and is not approved for either population. In studies, constipation was the most common side effect; four people developed acute colitis, which resolved once the drug was stopped. No causal link between the drug and colitis has been found, but in a statement, the Food and Drug Administration advised physicians to “interrupt treatment immediately” and promptly evaluate patients on Lotronex who develop symptoms of acute colitis, such as bloody diarrhea.
